...back to my blog!

It's not that I'm giving up on my business, but family business has definitely hit an all time high on the "busy scale"! I've definitely cut back on time allotted for SewArtsy sewing.

We are also planning on a drastic downsizing of lifestyle as a family, and so I'm having to find new homes for many items in our home. There are fat quarters who need new homes; fabric cuts that need new homes; notions that need...well, you know...new homes! In order to find these items new homes I've opened up a new shop on Etsy called SewArtsyDestash. I'd rather see these lovely items find their way to someone who will actually be able to use them than see them boxed up and stuck in a storage unit somewhere. It may be a while before they see the light of day if that happens.

Craft Show Setup

I recently participated in my first craft show in 2 years. It was a lot of fun getting back into the groove after taking a craft show haitus after my daughter was born. I made some modifications to the look of my booth, and thought I'd share some of the photos with you in case you are looking for set up ideas. (Unfortunately, the background is very cluttered, as my booth was in a first grade classroom right in front of the teacher's area!)

First off, this was an indoor show, so I knew I'd have a small rectangular space to work with. I chose to stick with one folding table, but also used a new grid wall section that I recently purchased. I used it to hang some of my pouches, my card case key chains, hair clippy caddies, and lanyards. And because I have a lot of color in my items I stuck with using a white table cloth to drape my table.

Once my table was set up I used several different items to create depth and height to my table. At one end was an inexpensive, plastic shelf that you snap together very easily into the configuration you need. I had used a much more elaborate version of these shelves a few years ago for an outdoor show, and after being exposed to my children since then this was about all I had left to work with, so I made do. At the other end was a cute hanging purse display that I used to hang some of my totes and purses. I kept all of the denim totes together for a uniform look, while all of the gray totes sat on the table top.

For my smaller items, I used a diverse group of serving pieces. The ideas was for customers to be able to pick up the plates and trays to look more closely at the items rather than having to bend over to rummage through everything. So rings went on black and white tiered serving dishes, and a festive gift box was available for my smaller zip pouches, and my fabric covered magnets were stuck onto bright blue tins. These I made available as a mix and match bunch so that I didn't have to worry about keeping like magnets together. Then when they were purchased I could put the sets into gift boxes for the customer.

As I'm sure you have experienced, I had tons of folks coming by telling me how beautiful my items were, but not browsing long enough to make a selection and purchase. So my goal was to right away when someone started looking was to offer them a "free bookmark". This of course was one of my Moo cards! The front of my Moo cards have a delightful, colorful photo I took of several of my pencil cases, and on the back had all of my business info. Then I hole punched them, and added a colorful ribbon to make the bookmark. People are always up for a freebie, so this at least got my information into their hands, and hopefully in a form they will be hesitant to throw away. The longer they hold onto their SewArtsy bookmark, the more likely they are to remember my product and make their way into my Etsy store at a later date.

Another New Ring Style!

I'm super excited about these little gems. Talk about sparkly! I'll have several of these rings, all one of a kind, in the SewArtsy shop over the next few days. They are each hand beaded onto button bases before being glued onto the adjustable base. These will be great for holiday parties, adding a little handmade bling to your outfit!

Rings for Your Little Girls

One of the new items that I've not had in the SewArtsy shop before, but made for my recent craft show, is a tiny button ring perfect for little girls' fingers. They are super sweet. I've made hearts and flowers so far, and am getting them listed into my Etsy shop.

These cute little rings have copper colored bases, so they are easy to tell apart from my regular sized rings. They fit snuggly on my pinky which is about a size 5. And of course they adjust from there - a little bit bigger, and squeezed to smaller sizes.

Ever Wonder Where I Started?

Oh, crafting, how I love thee! Let me count the ways!

I'm a life-long crafter. It all began with my first coloring pages, and box of scissors, glue, pom poms and stickers. I'd have to say from very early on I've been obsessed with the line of things. In most of my own art, line is everything. It's the shape of things I'm most struck by. I draw, I paint, I color, I sew, and that's how SewArtsy came about.

My mom sewed almost all of my clothes growing up. There were dresses for every special occasion, adorable summer clothes, bathing suits and cover-ups, homecoming dresses, prom dresses, and yes, even my wedding gown. I learned to pin and cut patterns at an early age. But somewhere along the way while I was being formed in the womb, I was not handed the garment-sewing gene! I tried early on to learn how to sew my own clothes, much to my own, and my mother's, frustration. It didn't take long until I just labeled myself a pinner and cutter, and left all of the garment sewing to her - and I still do! I'm not ashamed of it. I'm just more of a straight seam kind of girl - I want to make shapes. I became a fabulous sewer of pillows and little stuffed critters, and I found a love of buttons and embellishments! Eventually I learned a little about quilting, and found that I really enjoyed that. I could use fabulous fabrics, in a variety of cut shapes, and could embellish my finished works to my hearts content. One day I wanted to turn my pieced fabrics into a tote, and once I finished it I was hooked on handbags. Eventually I started making modifications to a basic tote pattern - resizing, reshaping, adding zippers, adding pockets, changing handles. Now I love designing accessories to go with my bags, and I'm much more confident and at ease with my sewing supplies. And of course with my embellishments! Buttons, crystals and appliques are my favorites, can't you tell?

For the record I still can't sew a garment to save my life, and I'm still not ashamed!

Etsy Holiday Bootcamp is Under Way!

A Fun Mixed Media Project

Recently I was asked by a friend to make her daughter a kiddie sized purse as a gift from her parents for her 3rd birthday. Of course I was ever so happy to make something for this sweet little girl! So while I was making her this little bag, I also wanted to send her something that would be a present from us.

When decorating my daughter's room I made some wall art using Anna Maria Horner's painted silhouette technique, and loved how they turned out. But I've been wanting to make some artwork that is strictly fabric to make sort of the same effect, and then add embellishments to make it three dimensional. So I decided that Jordan would be my guinea pig of sorts!

I chose 2 fabrics that I thought worked well together, but were different enough so that her name would stand out from the background. I traced the letters onto fusible webbing (remembering to reverse the image when you're working with words!), and then cut out the letters in Jordan's name. From here I adhered the letters to the center of the background fabric, which I had measured ahead of time to make sure it would wrap around to the back of the size of canvas I had chosen to work with (this was 12"x6"). You could also stitch over the applique before moving on to the next step, but I chose not to.

At this point I grabbed my staple gun, and began to wrap the prepared fabric around the canvas, making sure her name was centered, and stapling at the back so the sides had a nice finished look for hanging. (Make sure to start in the middle of each side, and work your way out with the staples, pulling the fabric a bit taut to make sure no bubbles or wrinkles occur). After I made clean corner folds, and was happy with the position of everything at this point, I started to embellish (my favorite part!). I hand sewed some buttons through the canvas itself, I used Sharpie Paint Pens to add a shadow line to the letters so they would look more three-dimensional, and then hot fixed some clear crystals below Jordan's name - and it was fit for a princess.

Do You Zazzle?

I've Zazzled! And I want to share with you the fruits of my Zazzling! How about these sweet shoes that make me a walking billboard.

Two weeks ago I started playing around with different design-your-own products at Zazzle.com. You can choose from stock designs or you can create your own. Just on a whim I decided to see how my logo would look, and step after easy step through their process my brand new SewArtsy shoes were designed right before my very eyes. And while their website says it can take up to 4 weeks to receive your custom designed products, here I am seeing them in the flesh (or canvas as the case may be) just two weeks from the day I ordered them. That's pretty awesome service!

You should definitely drop by and create your own!

Wedding Planning

Are you in the midst of planning a wedding? How fun! OK, and a little bit stressful, too, right? I'm not planning a wedding, but I do enjoy reading others ideas for including handmade style into their weddings. I've often thought that my little button rings would make cute bridesmaids gifts, or bridal shower favors. A Little Inspiration

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

I read my newsletter this morning from Hawthorne Threads, and wanted to share a new fabric collection they are carrying in their shop. I'm inspired by this High Society collection, especially the clay palette, in its understated classiness. The colors are striking, though not in your face, and the line of Khristian A. Howell's artwork has a beautiful flow to it. I'm loving gray this season, and orange is always a favorite of mine - this one especially for fall! I can't wait to order me some of this to play with! Off I go!

Well, it’s not January 1^st, but it is September 13^th! And as of today I have 1 little boy who’s at school all day 5 days a week, and 1 little boy who’s at school 1 full day and 2 half days a week. And I am rejoicing! It was a tense summer in places with three little ones, and I have fully enjoyed my first morning in a long time with my darling (almost 2 year old!) daughter, just her and me.

So it is happy "new" year for me, and I’ve been working on my mission statement this weekend for my blog and business. I’ve been wanting to do this for quite a while, but feel like right now is the right time for me. With the help of Tara Gentile aka ScoutieGirl, I’m learning how to be more organized and more purposeful about blogging my passion – SewArtsy.

Through SewArtsy I’d like to bring a little “artsy” into your day-to-day. I have a passion for fabric, design, style, function, and making life simpler and more organized through my fabric wares. Simplicity of style, form and function are my inspiration; my passion for fabrics fleshes out my ideas to bring that little bit of “artsy” to your day. As I embark on a journey to become more "artsy" in my day-to-day living, I hope you will join me and be inspired to put a little more "artsy" into yours!

At SewArtsy I make fashionable fabric wares – pieces that bring a little “artsy” into day-to-day living! It is my desire that through both the SewArtsy blog, and SewArtsy products, that I can give you something to make you smile each day.
